Reviews of SEO companies: options compared, and how to choose

If you have typed "reviews of SEO companies" into Google, you are probably staring down a decision that costs real money every month and does not always show results for months after that. You have likely already scrolled through a dozen agency websites that all promise "page one rankings" and "guaranteed traffic growth", and none of them explain what you are actually paying for. That confusion is the exact problem we deal with every week at Bantam Growth Studio, working with tradies, clinics, salons and hospitality operators across Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast.

We are not a directory site ranking every agency in Australia. We are an SEO and website growth studio that runs visibility audits, fixes what is actually costing small businesses customers, and does it on a flat monthly retainer with no lock-in contract. This article is written from that vantage point: what we see when business owners come to us after a bad experience with another provider, what questions actually separate a good SEO company from a bad one, and how to read reviews without getting fooled by star ratings alone.

Why star ratings alone do not tell you much

Most SEO companies have decent Google reviews. That is not surprising, because agencies actively ask happy clients to leave reviews and quietly manage away unhappy ones, sometimes by offering discounts in exchange for taking a review down. A 4.8 star rating with 40 reviews tells you the company is good at collecting reviews. It does not tell you whether their SEO work moved the needle on your specific type of business, in your specific location, against your specific competitors.

When we talk to a trade business or a clinic that has just left another agency, the complaint is rarely "they were rude" or "the reports looked bad". It is almost always some version of: "I couldn't tell what they actually did each month" or "my rankings didn't change but they kept sending me the same report with different colours." Reviews do not usually capture that kind of slow-burn dissatisfaction because most people leave a review either right after signing up (when they are hopeful) or don't bother leaving one at all when they quietly cancel.

What to actually look for when comparing SEO companies

Based on the audits we run for small businesses across South East Queensland, here is what separates providers worth paying from providers who are just billing hours.

  • They can show you a visibility audit before you sign anything. A proper audit identifies which searches your business is missing out on, where your Google Business Profile is under-performing, and what technical issues are quietly capping your rankings. If an agency wants a contract signed before they will show you any diagnosis, that is a warning sign.
  • They explain the work in plain language, not jargon. If you cannot understand what "technical SEO remediation" or "authority building sprint" actually means for your business, ask again. A good SEO partner should be able to tell a hairdresser in Maroochydore exactly which pages need fixing and why, in language that makes sense to someone who runs a salon, not a marketing department.
  • There is no lock-in contract. Twelve month contracts exist to protect the agency's cash flow, not to protect your results. If the work is genuinely good, a business should want to stay because of the outcomes, not because they are contractually stuck.
  • Pricing is flat and transparent. Watch for vague line items, surprise add-ons for "content credits" or "link packages", and pricing that scales up every quarter without a clear reason.
  • They prioritise fixes based on revenue impact, not busywork. Cheap SEO providers often pad monthly reports with low-value tasks, like writing generic blog posts that never rank, instead of fixing the handful of issues that are actually suppressing your visibility for the searches that matter to your business.
  • They will tell you what SEO cannot do. Any company promising guaranteed page one rankings within a fixed timeframe is either overselling or planning to use tactics that risk a Google penalty. Real SEO improves visibility over months, not days, and a credible provider will say so plainly.

Big agencies versus specialist studios versus tools like Whitespark

Search around and you will find three broad categories of providers reviewed under this keyword. It helps to know which one you are actually comparing.

Full-service marketing agencies bundle SEO in with paid ads, social media and web design. This can work if you want one invoice for everything, but SEO often becomes a minor line item handled by a junior staff member rotating between dozens of clients. For a small clinic or trade business, this usually means slow turnaround and generic strategy.

Software and tools providers, such as Whitespark, are built for agencies and marketers who want to do citation building or local SEO tracking themselves. These are genuinely useful tools if you or someone on your team has the time and skill to run local SEO in-house, but they are not a done-for-you service. If you are an owner-operator already working sixty hours a week, a tool without implementation support will not move your rankings on its own.

Specialist SEO and growth studios, which is where Bantam sits, focus specifically on visibility and organic growth for small, local businesses. The advantage is depth: we are not distracted by ad campaigns or social content, we are focused on why a business is not showing up for the searches that would bring it paying customers, and we fix that directly.

What we do differently at Bantam Growth Studio

We built our process around the two complaints we hear most often from small business owners who have tried SEO before: not knowing what they are paying for, and feeling locked into a contract that is not delivering.

Every engagement starts with a visibility audit. We look at where your business is currently ranking, which searches you are missing entirely, how your Google Business Profile compares to competitors in your suburb, and what technical issues on your website are holding you back. From there we prioritise fixes based on where the real revenue opportunity sits, not based on what fills out a monthly report nicely.

Work happens on a flat monthly retainer, so you know exactly what you are paying and there are no surprise invoices for extra tasks. There is no lock-in contract. If the work is not delivering, you can leave. We think that arrangement keeps everyone honest, us included.

This approach tends to suit trades, clinics, salons and hospitality businesses particularly well, because these are industries where local search visibility (being found by someone nearby who is ready to book or buy) has a direct and measurable line to revenue. A plumber ranking for "emergency plumber Gold Coast" or a physio ranking for "physiotherapist Sunshine Coast" is not chasing vanity traffic, they are chasing calls and bookings.

Questions to ask before you sign with any SEO company

  • Can you show me a visibility audit for my business before I commit to anything?
  • What specifically will you fix in the first month, and why those items first?
  • Is your pricing flat, and what would trigger an increase?
  • Is there a lock-in contract, and if so, what happens if I want to leave early?
  • Can you show me results from a business similar to mine, in a similar location?
  • How will you report progress, and will I be able to understand the report without a marketing background?

Any legitimate SEO company should answer these without hesitation. If you get vague answers, defensive answers, or pressure to sign quickly, treat that as useful information.

Next steps

If you are comparing SEO companies right now, the most useful thing you can do before signing anything is get an independent read on where your business actually stands in search. That is exactly what our visibility audit is for. It is not a sales pitch dressed up as an audit, it is a genuine look at the searches you are missing and the fixes that would matter most for your business, whether you end up working with us or not.

If you run a trade, clinic, salon or hospitality business in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast or the Gold Coast and want to see where the gaps are, get in touch with Bantam Growth Studio for a visibility audit. No lock-in, flat monthly pricing if you decide to move forward, and a plain explanation of what we would fix first and why.
